Action movie that kept fans ‘on the edge of their seat’ with 94% rating

A 2023 action film has fans “on the edge of their seats” and it has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Plane, directed by Jean-François Richet, is an action thriller that follows a commercial pilot who joins forces with a suspected murderer in order to save his passengers from a hostile territory during an emergency landing.

The film’s synopsis reads: “Pilot Brodie Torrance saves passengers from a lightning strike by making a risky landing on a war-torn island – only to find that surviving the landing was just the beginning. When dangerous rebels take most of the passengers hostage, the only person Torrance can count on for help is Louis Gaspare, an accused murderer who was being transported by the FBI.”

Plane stars Gerard Butler, who was also a producer on the movie, alongside Mike Colter, Yoson An and Tony Goldwyn.

The film was a hit at the box-office and this is reflected in its Rotten Tomatoes overall score of 94% from more than 1,000 reviews.

The audience praise the film, stating: “Check your critical thinking at the gate: The plot’s preposterous and loaded with entertaining action, making Plane plenty of good old-fashioned fun.”

One audience reviewer described the film as an “edge of your seat movie”, with another adding they “loved loved loved” this film and awarded five stars.

The critics overall awarded Plane with a respectable 78% score, their consensus reading: “Plane charts a standard action-adventure course with its cruising altitude just a few miles above Direct-to-Video – but with Gerard Butler in the cockpit, thriller enthusiasts will still find this a fun flight.”

One critic said: “Plane makes it clear that it isn’t reaching for new heights but it doesn’t wing it either, delivering perfectly acceptable entertainment.”

“Nobody’s going to declare Plane a classic, but between Richet’s visual acumen and Butler doing admirable diligence to a character who’s in over his head… it’s an enjoyable, fast-paced and surprisingly engaging diversion,'” another added.
