The ‘ultimate’ British rom-com starring two Hollywood stars is leaving Netflix

Fans have billed this classic British  film as the “ultimate rom-com” and it is leaving Netflix soon. Notting Hill will leave the streaming platform on July 5.

The film follows a romance between a British bookshop keeper and a famous American actress who happens to walk into his shop in London’s Notting Hill district. Notting Hill’s synopsis reads: “William Thacker is a London bookstore owner whose humdrum existence is thrown into romantic turmoil when famous American actress Anna Scott appears in his shop. A chance encounter over spilled orange juice leads to a kiss that blossoms into a full-blown affair. As the average bloke and glamorous movie star draw closer and closer together, they struggle to reconcile their radically different lifestyles in the name of love.”

Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts are the stars of Notting Hill alongside Hugh Bonneville, Emma Chambers, James Dreyfus, Rhys Ifans and Tim McInnerny.

The film was released in 1999 and written by Richard Curtis. Then, it became the highest-grossing British film of all time, winning a British Comedy Award and a Brit Award for its soundtrack. The film also received Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture, Best Actress for Roberts, and Best Actor for Grant.

BBC Radio 2 listeners crowned the film as the “Ultimate Rom-Com” back in 2022.

James King of Radio 2 said: “There’s no doubt about it, Radio 2 listeners have crowned Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant the Queen and King of rom-coms.

“Blending jokes with romance, and charm with emotion is no mean feat as an actor, but these two have proved they’re the best at it again and again.

“And in our winner, Notting Hill, there’s a sparkling Richard Curtis script that puts us all in the middle of a funny, feel-good, fairy tale love story. A worthy winner.”

Producer of Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral, Duncan Kenworthy OBE, said: “Seeing Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral in James’s all-time Top 40 list was already an incredible compliment.

“To have both of them voted into the top five was simply amazing. But to hear that Notting Hill has come top as the Ultimate Rom-Com (of all time!) is heart-stoppingly thrilling.”

Notting Hill will leave Netflix on July 5.
