Liverpool transfer ‘confirmed’ too early in blunder following Wirtz’s arrival

It’s also believed that left-back Kerkez is closing in on joining the Reds in a deal valued at about £40m. It’s been reported Kerkez will soon undergo a medical ahead of a move next week. However, Lineker prematurely suggested the transfer was already sealed.

On Sunday’s episode of The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker said: “Liverpool have been impressive so far with the signings they have done. They have just completed Florian Wirtz for £116m, that’s a lot of dough, from Bayer Leverkusen, but he’s a wonderfully talented player.”

He then spoke too early around Kerkez’s situation, continuing: “Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for around £40m. They join Jeremie Frimpong, who signed a couple of weeks ago, all three worth just under £200m.”

While it seems almost certain that Kerkez will be heading to Liverpool, the unpredictability of football transfers means nothing is guaranteed until the announcement is confirmed. If Kerkez’s move to Anfield was to fall through at the medical stage, it wouldn’t be the first time that has happened to the Reds.

Back in 2018, Liverpool supporters were left disappointed when a £58.5m deal for Lyon midfielder Nabil Fekir fell apart at the eleventh hour. The club had agreed on a fee and personal terms with Fekir, who was seen as Philippe Coutinho’s long-term successor.

However, a knee problem detected during the medical put paid to the transfer. Fekir has since disputed this, claiming he passed his medical and was confused as to why the move didn’t go ahead.

Reds fans will be hoping that Lineker’s statement doesn’t jinx Kerkez’s move. The left-back, who scored two goals and provided six assists in 38 Premier League appearances last season, would push Liverpool‘s spending over the £200million mark if goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili’s transfer is included in this year’s figures, despite the fact that a deal with Valencia was agreed last summer.

It’s also felt Liverpool are far from done with their summer transfer business. They have also been reported to be considering a move for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, along with Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

According to The Telegraph, Slot’s team are particularly interested in Isak, who had an impressive run last season with 23 goals and six assists in 34 Premier League appearances.
