Unconfirmed media reports Thursday claimed Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, were killed in a car crash in northern Spain.
According to Spanish sports daily Marca, the 28-year-old Portuguese international and his 26-year-old brother were traveling on the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria in the Zamora province when their vehicle veered off the road at kilometer 65 and caught fire.
Emergency services reportedly found the car engulfed in flames and pronounced both occupants dead at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
No official statements have been released by Liverpool FC, the Portuguese Football Federation, or Spanish authorities and as of Thursday morning, the information has not been verified by major English-language news organizations.
The accident allegedly occurred in the early hours of Thursday on a stretch of the A-52 known for sharp bends and poor visibility, especially at night.
The road, which connects Benavente to Ourense, has been the site of several serious accidents in recent years.
Jota, born Dec. 4, 1996, in Massarelos, Portugal, was regarded as one of Europe’s most dynamic forwards.
He made his name at Wolverhampton Wanderers before signing for Liverpool in 2020, where he scored 85 goals in 233 appearances. He was instrumental in Liverpool’s 2021-22 domestic cup double and played a key role in their 2024-25 Premier League title win.
Despite an injury-plagued season, Jota tallied 12 goals and eight assists in 28 matches in 2024-25. Internationally, he earned 48 caps for Portugal, scoring 14 goals and appearing in both the UEFA Nations League and the 2024 European Championship.
His personal life had also reached a joyful milestone. Jota married longtime partner Rute Cardoso in a widely publicized ceremony on June 28, just five days before the reported accident. The couple had three children.
