Sinner pulls out of US Open 2025 mixed doubles event

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has pulled out of the revamped mixed doubles event at US Open 2025, a day after retiring from the Cincinnati Open final against Carlos Alcaraz due to illness.

Sinner was supposed to play with 10-time women’s doubles Major champion Katerina Siniakova. The duo had been awarded a wildcard and was scheduled to take on the German-Swiss pair of Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic in the first round in New York.

However, a few hours before the match, the schedule on the tournament website mentioned that the Zverev-Bencic duo’s opponent will be the local pair of Christian Harrison and Danielle Collins.

Sinner, who turned 24 on Saturday, was down 0-5 in the first set of the Cincinnati Open final when he told the chair umpire that he could not play any further. Later, he  revealed that had started feeling ill on Sunday and his condition worsened overnight.

The Italian did not speak to journalists after the loss, issuing a statement saying only that he would definitely play at the US Open in New York, where the singles main draw starts on Sunday.
