Ruben Amorim confessed he cannot guarantee he will still be Manchester United manager following the international break. The embattled Amorim confronts a crucial clash with Burnley on Saturday, after United’s shocking EFL Cup elimination to League Two side Grimsby during the week.
United have managed just one point from their first two Premier League fixtures to sit 16th in the standings, with Amorim acknowledging there are no assurances regarding his position after such a dismal beginning. When questioned whether he was certain he would remain United’s manager beyond the forthcoming international break, Amorim responded: “I don’t know what is going to happen, but that is my idea.
“But again, I’m not going to promise you anything about what is going to be the future. But I’m the manager of Manchester United and I think that is not going to change.”
Following the penalty shoot-out loss at Blundell Park, Amorim declared his players had “spoken really loudly about what they want” through their woeful display.
This was broadly understood as Amorim implying the performance revealed his squad had lost confidence in him and his approach, after nine months at the helm.
However, Amorim insisted his comments were delivered in the heat of the moment and should not be interpreted literally, conceding he permitted his emotions to overwhelm him after the massive shock.
“Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I want to defend my players,” said Amorim. “Sometimes I want to quit. Sometimes I want to be here for 20 years, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I don’t want to be here with them.
“This is my way of doing things and I’m going to be like that. I was frustrated and annoyed. I know you have a lot of experienced players saying I should be more calm.
“But I’m going to be who I am and at that moment I was really upset and disappointed.
“I felt we had a really good pre-season. We played badly for 30 minutes against Fulham. So I was really disappointed in everything.”
