Former Test quick Harris new South Australia coach

Ryan Harris will take his next step up the coaching ladder at South Australia after being appointed as Jason Gillespie’s full-time successor for the state job.

Harris was officially confirmed as South Australia’s new coach on Tuesday, five months after taking over as an interim following Gillespie’s move to Pakistan.

Former Test quick Harris has worked in Cricket Australia’s pathways system since his retirement in 2015, before becoming an assistant to Gillespie at the Redbacks last summer.

He coached Australia in the U19 World Cup in 2018 and 2020, and also briefly served as the fast bowling coach of the women’s national side.

Harris debuted as a player at South Australia in 2001, before moving to Queensland in 2008 to pursue a Test career.

“I’m thrilled and honoured to be appointed head coach of South Australia where I began my first-class playing journey more than 20 years ago,” Harris said.

“Having worked closely with the team last summer and during our current pre-season training, I know what this squad is capable of and can’t wait to get started and build on the positive steps we saw last year.”
