Dual World Cup winners Jonny Bairstow and Mooen Ali have been dropped from England’s white-ball set-up, with five uncapped players named in squads for the upcoming series against Australia.
Bairstow and Mooen were both part of the 2019 World Cup triumph on home soil and the T20 equivalent in Australia in 2022, but have struggled over the past 12 months as England surrendered both crowns.
With head coach Matthew Mott leaving earlier this summer, the three-match T20 series and run of five ODIs against Australia are being seen as the start of a fresh cycle under interim boss Marcus Trescothick.
Instead, Dan Mousley and 20-year-old batter Jacob Bethell have both been called up for the first time in any format, and are joined by fellow rookies Jordan Cox, Josh Hull and John Turner.
All five newcomers are in the T20 squad, with Bethel, Turner and six-foot-seven left-armer Hull, also included for the ODIs.
England’s Test players will not feature in the T20 series, but Gus Atkinson, Matthew Potts, Jamie Smith and Harry Brook will be involved in the ODIs. Joe Root, however, has been rested, while Mark Wood and Ben Stokes are injured, meaning only Adil Rashid, Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer remain of the crop that won the World Cup five years ago.
The fit-again Saqib Mahmood is back in the T20 fold, 18 months on from his last international appearance, while Durham’s Brydon Carse is picked after returning from a gambling ban.
