Rafael Nadal could retire at Davis Cup as Spaniard joins Carlos Alcaraz in squad

Rafael Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam singles champion, has been named in Spain’s squad for the Davis Cup finals in Malaga, which could mark his farewell event.

The tennis legend, who has not played since reaching the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles at the Paris Olympics, has previously hinted that this season may be his last.

Alongside Nadal in the Spanish team are world number three Carlos Alcaraz, Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Carreno and Marcel Granollers.

“He (Nadal) told me about his desire to be in Malaga if we qualify,” said team captain David Ferrer during a press conference on Monday.

“Everything was very easy because it was he who from the beginning wanted to be in the finals.”

“There are still two months left and all the players who are on the list have to compete and see how they are, but the good thing is that there are many possibilities to combine doubles depending on physical exhaustion or how the tie is going.”

The Davis Cup finals will take place from November 19 to 24, with Spain set to face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

Defending champions Italy, led by world number one Jannik Sinner, will compete against Argentina, while the United States will go head-to-head with Australia and Germany will meet Canada.
