Ruben Amorim has spoken for the first time after being appointed as Erik ten Hag‘s successor.
The hugely successful manager arrives in the Premier League after an impressive stint with Sporting, where he won two league titles across his four-year stint as boss.
Despite being announced as Ten Hag’s replacement last month, Amorim was forced to wait until the November international break before packing his bags and heading to England.
Officially welcomed for the first time as United manager on Monday, Amorim has since been introduced to the training ground, before setting sights on the Old Trafford pitch for the first time.
Speaking during a teaser clip to an extended interview posted to the United social media channels, Amorim said: “You watch on TV and you know it’s [Old Trafford] big and it’s impressive, but when you’re here, you can feel it.
“I think you feel the history, I am really really proud to be the Manchester United coach, so it’s amazing. It’s a real honour to be here.”
Having managed in the Champions League with Sporting, Amorim is no stranger to football’s biggest stages, with the Portuguese coach maintaining his composure while being introduced to the Theatre of Dreams.
He added: “I feel really relaxed, maybe because it’s not gameday. When we have a game I’m a different guy.
“I really don’t feel the weight, I’m really excited and I’m quite relaxed. I think I am where I’m supposed to be, that’s the feeling.”
Amorim will have a little longer to wait before he returns to Old Trafford for a match, given his first game in charge of the three-time European champions is away to Ipswich Town.
United return to Manchester that mid-week for back-to-back home matches, firstly against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League, before the weekend visit of Everton in the Premier League.
But one man who won’t be in Stretford for those fixtures is Ruud van Nistelrooy, with the ex-Red Devils ace’s departure confirmed earlier this week.
Penning an emotional goodbye to United fans on Friday afternoon, the Dutchman said: “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible efforts and support. It has been a privilege and honour to represent the club as a player, coach and manager, and I will always cherish the memories we have shared together.
“Man Utd will always have a special place in my heart, and I hope there are many more glory days at Old Trafford very soon – not only because I want the club to do well, but because you all deserve it! All the best and take care, Ruud.”
