The son of one of the finest cricketers Western Australia has ever produced has been given a fresh nod in a burgeoning football career.
Will Hussey, the 19-year-old son of Australian Test great Michael, has been named in East Fremantle’s colts leadership group.
And he has been elevated to the role without even playing a game for the club. Hussey ruptured his ACL at the start of last season and his only appearance for the Sharks was in a WAFL colts pre-season game.
And he is in there alongside another son-of-a-gun, Oli McManus, the son of former Fremantle and Sharks great Shaun.
In a video posted to the club’s social media, Hussey said his main goal was to get back on the park.
“My main goal would be playing a game, because I did my ACL at the start of last year, so not ideal,” he said.
“More team success, I’m just really excited to see how we can go as a team, so big goal is to get into the finals and I think that would be real cool if we can.
“There’s a real buzz amongst the boys so we’re all really excited for it.
“For the colts, the boys have been really flying for the first month of pre-season, so to all the fans I just say get down and support us all, it’s really exciting and we can’t wait.”
Hussey was six when his father called time on his 79-match Test career.
McManus has trained with Fremantle’s Next Generation Academy thanks to ties with his father, who captained the club during his 228-game career.
The 18-year-old has played six games for the Sharks’ colts team.
