20% export duty on onion to be withdrawn with effect from April 1

The government announced on March 22 the removal of the 20 per cent export duty on onions, effective from April 1, with the intention of safeguarding farmers’ interests.

This decision was communicated through a notification from the Department of Revenue, following guidance from the Department of Consumer Affairs, as stated in an official announcement.

According to the consumer affairs ministry, this action highlights the government’s dedication to ensuring that farmers receive fair prices while also keeping onions affordable for consumers during a critical time when both mandi and retail prices have decreased due to the anticipated arrival of the rabi crop in substantial amounts.

The export duty had been implemented in September 2024, but despite this limitation, onion exports totaled 11.65 lakh tonnes as of March 18 for the current fiscal year.

The quantity exported monthly saw an increase, rising from 0.72 lakh tonnes in September 2024 to 1.85 lakh tonnes in January of the current year.

Onion prices have declined in major producing states as a result of the increased influx of the rabi crop.
