Liverpool boss Slot cracks Salah money joke as Van Dijk verdict given

Arne Slot has joked that ‘money’ played a role in Liverpool retaining the services of Mohamed Salah. The Reds announced that the winger has penned a two-year extension at Anfield today (Friday).

Salah had reached the final few months of his contract prior to putting pen to paper on a bumper new deal, with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold similarly on the cusp of becoming free agents as it stands.

Salah was heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League this summer, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly showing an interest in the forward too, but has decided to remain on Merseyside.

Asked about the role that he played, as manager, in convincing his No. 11 to stay put, Slot explained: “I am part of the process but I don’t deserve the compliments, it’s Mo, his agent and then FSG, Richard (Hughes), they all put the effort, which means money!”

After laughing at his remark, he added: “But also effort. What it might tell you is that it is not only a good season now we want more next season and Mo is convinced we can do so. So that is positive for us.”
