Rafael Nadal’s three things he misses about tennis including surprise pick

Rafael Nadal has revealed the unique moments before a match are what he misses the most about the sport. The Spaniard decided to call time on his glittering career in 2024, bowing out as a legend of tennis at the Davis Cup finals in Malaga.

Nadal said goodbye to his career with a huge trophy collection, including a record 14 French Open titles, two Australian Open wins, four US Open victories and two Wimbledon triumphs. The 38-year-old spent 209 weeks as the world number one men’s player in tennis, and his 81 consecutive victories on clay continue to be the longest single-surface win streak in the modern era. It is clear that Nadal is a champion like no other – but what does he miss most about the sport?

Well, according to a TikTok posted on the ex-athlete’s official page, Nadal misses the adrenaline rush, pre-match stress, and stepping out just before a match. He feels the stress he would experience before a big tournament is an emotion only tennis can bring.

Nadal said: “What I miss most is the adrenaline rush, the pre-match nerves, and the feeling of stepping onto the court. It’s something that’s hard to find outside of the world of sport.”

The idea of enjoying stress and nerves may be a foreign concept to many people who aren’t involved in a competitive sport, and one might imagine he’d be glad to be rid of such pressure. But Nadal embraced these emotions to drive him to his success on the courts.

The Spaniard also admitted that he couldn’t imagine a career other than tennis, adding: “I couldn’t imagine my life any other way than being a tennis player. In the end, I’ve been a professional since I was 15, and at that point in my life, I don’t think I had yet decided what I wanted to do if tennis didn’t work out.”

When asked if he had any advice for those starting out in tennis for the first time, Nadal was succinct with his reply. “I think it’s about striving to improve every day,” he stated.

“I think this is the most important thing. In the end, I believe that the people who are successful are those who are capable of constantly improving.”
