Bradford’s 96th-minute winner against Fleetwood sealed promotion to League Two and sparked a chaotic finale. Referee Martin Coy was forced to briefly suspend the match after fans spilled onto the Valley Parade pitch.
Antoni Sarcevic’s dramatic late goal prompted wild scenes. The midfielder deflected George Lapslie’s shot into the corner of the net just as a nail-biting affair for the former Premier League club appeared to be heading towards a goalless draw. It seemed that the Bantams were destined for the play-offs after starting the day in third place, the final spot for a team to earn automatic promotion. They had to match Walsall’s result, with the Saddlers beating Crewe 1-0.
Jubilant supporters stormed onto the pitch as Sarcevic wheeled away in celebration. Fearing for the safety of the players, Coy halted the game and led those involved off the pitch.
Fans were urged to return to their seats and were told that play would not resume until they had done so. It took 15 minutes for the players to re-emerge to finish the match.
