Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has urged the club’s board to back Ruben Amorim in the summer transfer window, insisting they as many reinforcements as possible. The former Red Devils captain is confident Amorim will oversee drastic improvement next season, but only if he gets the opportunity to reshape his squad.
Despite a dreadful campaign as a team, Maguire has enjoyed a renaissance at the heart of the Portuguese tactician’s back three. On Friday, United announced that the 32-year-old had finished third in the fan vote for the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, emphasising his turnaround. He should have a role to play next season after the club triggered the one-year extension in his contract until July 2026.
And Maguire has expressed his belief that United can look like an entirely different team next term, should INEOS and the recruitment team get active in the transfer market.
“I believe that things will turn around quickly,” Maguire explained in a frank interview about this season’s woes with Sky Sports.
“I think we’re setting a culture now… The results have been rubbish, nowhere near good enough, embarrassing, all the words you can say.
“But I do believe it’s not too far away from turning around, and I think with the right players coming in the summer… Of course, we need help. We need more players.
“I want as many as we can to make competition for places, and if you’re there and the manager wants you to compete for those places and you’re part of his plans, then you move forward.
“But of course I want to be in a successful team, I want as many good players as we can in the door just to make us better.
“And I’m sure they will do, I’m sure the club will get it right in the summer. We do need fresh faces, and I know for a fact that next season, we will improve a lot.”
Amorim reportedly has the base budget to fund a £92.5million double swoop for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.
The 40-year-old is also said to want a new midfielder, with Christian Eriksen leaving as a free agent and Casemiro entering the final year of his contract.
However, Amorim may have to rely on player sales beyond that attacking duo, especially if United miss out on Champions League qualification.
Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia should all leave Old Trafford permanently after their respective loan spells.
Andre Onana, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund are among the other first-team players who could be in the shop window.
