‘Delightful reimagining’ of classic play that ‘lives up to the hype’

Netflix has just added a ‘miracle romcom’ based on a classic play that ‘definitely lives up to the hype’.

The film, Anyone But You, is now available on the streaming platform.

Originally released in cinemas in 2023, it features rising stars Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney.

Powell is set to appear in Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man later this year.

On the other hand, Euphoria star Sweeney will be seen in the thriller The Housemaid and biopic Christy.

Billed as an edgy comedy, the plot follows a couple who, after a fantastic first date, find their initial attraction quickly fading. When Bea and Ben unexpectedly end up at a destination wedding in Australia, they pretend to be the perfect couple to maintain appearances.

The storyline is based on William Shakespeare’s classic play Much Ado About Nothing. The main characters’ names are shortened versions of the original, with Bea and Ben replacing Beatrice and Benedick, reports the Mirror.

Additionally, the villainous Don John becomes Bea’s ex-fiancé John.

Despite not being a hit with critics upon its release, earning only a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, fans thought differently. Anyone But You’s popcornmeter fan score sits at a more impressive 87%.

One fan praised the contemporary spin on a classic tale, posting: “A delightful reimagining of Much Ado About Nothing, two people form an instant connection, and then due to misunderstanding they now despise each other. So, of course, they are forced into a situation where they must get along.”

Another viewer predicted that the film’s reputation will only grow with time, commenting: “This film is going to be an absolute classic talked about for years and years to come, loved this film from the fantastic opening scene, this film is top notch, hilarious and cleverly written.”

A third person hailed the film as a standout in its genre, stating: “Outstanding, romcoms have been done to death but every now and then, one comes along where everything falls into Place that makes it a pretty memorable one, a ‘miracle romcom’ and this is one of them.”

They added: “It was one of the most highly touted films last year, great to finally see it come out on Netflix and it definitely lives up to the hype about it. The best thing about it for me was the humour.”

Meanwhile, another individual declared: “An absolute gem of a romcom! I can’t help but gush about this film, now firmly nestled in the coveted top three of my all-time favourites in the genre. What sets it apart is the brilliant storyline – a delightful concoction of classic romance seamlessly interwoven with genuinely funny moments.”

Anyone But You is streaming on Netflix.
