MCU veterans in talks to return for Marvel’s Avengers 5 and Avengers Secret Wars

The next two MCU crossover event movies are very much in the works, but just who will oversee Untitled Avengers 5 and Avengers Secret Wars?

Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy was in talks, while Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame’s Russo Brothers reportedly asked but were turned down by Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige.

Yet it appears the MCU boss has changed his mind as The Hollywood Reporter’s sources are now claiming that Joe and Anthony Russo are in the early stages of talks.

The pair have expressed in the past how they’d love to adapt the multiverse epic Secret Wars, which is rumoured to see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man team up with Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man.

Meanwhile, scooper Daniel Richtman has some insider info on the talks too.

Richtman posted on X: “Russo Bros literally approached Marvel and told them they want to direct this and Feige told them they’re looking at other directors! But no other director wanted this gig so they circled back to the Russos and told them, you know what, ok.

“Something to keep in mind about the Russo Bros: while they’re still just ’in talks’ like it was with Levy, things look promising. They want to start shooting in March and they need an announcement for SDCC [San Diego Comic Con] to get people excited, so they might speed things up to close a deal soon.”

Additionally, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Loki scribe Michael Waldron has recently dropped out of writing Avengers 5.

So perhaps the Russos could bring back their Marvel screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely who penned MCU Goliaths Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame.

Avengers 5 is set to hit cinemas in May 2026 and Avengers Secret Wars in May 2027.
