Michael Caine, 92, coming out of retirement for sequel to critically-panned film

Two years ago, Sir Michael Caine starred in The Great Escaper as a World War 2 veteran, in what was expected to be his last movie.

The 92-year-old had all but retired, but in a surprise turn of events, he is headed back to the big screen once again to reprise a role.

According to Deadline, Vin Diesel will star in a sequel to 2015’s The Last Witch Hunter, and Caine will return as the titular actor’s priestly mentor, Dolan.

The original action fantasy movie followed Diesel’s immortal witch hunter as he sought to prevent a plague from spreading across the Earth.

With 18 per cent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, fans might be wondering how Caine was persuaded to return for a sequel to the critically panned adventure. And it turns out he and his wife Shakira are “really close” with Diesel and his partner.

In his 2025 memoir Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over, Caine wrote: “Vin’s special. I love Vin. We first met at a dinner party about thirty years ago. I just instinctively greeted him with a hug and announced to the whole room, ‘This is my son!’ Sometimes, you sense a connection. I just liked the guy immediately; he has a big heart. It turned out he was going through some tough times back then, so I think perhaps it made an impression upon him to be embraced and treated with love. Anyway, we’ve been great friends ever since.”

As for a return to the world of The Last Witch Hunter,  Caine added, “My grandchildren, Taylor, Allegra, and Miles loved that film! Vin really speaks to the younger generation. He’s a real star, and multi-talented. A fine producer who also writes scripts and gets deeply involved in the concept of his movies.”
