Palworld has been given a new update on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (via Steam).
Unlike most updates, however, Palworld patch 0.5.5 arguably changes a feature for the worse instead of adding something new.
As you can see from the patch notes further down the page, the update changes the way gliding works in the Pokemon-style adventure.
Instead of using your Pals as makeshift gliders, developer Pocketpair has changed it to regular gliders. Gliders will, however, provide a passive partner skill effect while gliding.
The changes are in response to Pocketpair’s current legal battle with The Pokemon Company, something that was addressed in a message on X.
“Currently, we remain involved in prolonged legal proceedings regarding alleged patent infringement,” Pocketpair explains.
“We continue to dispute these claims and assert the invalidity of the patents in question. However, we have had to make certain compromises in order to avoid disruptions to the development and distribution of Palworld.”
Pocketpair points to a previous patch where instead of throwing spheres to summon Pals, companions would automatically appear as static summons.
The change to summons and Gliders are said to be “necessary in order to prevent further disruptions to the development of Palworld”.

Mechanics Adjustment
• The mechanics for gliding with a Pal have been changed.
– Until now, you could use certain Pals as a glider, however from this patch you will only be able to glide by using a glider.
– Glider Pals will now provide a new passive partner skill effect while gliding, but the player must have a glider equipped to actually glide.
