It’s been an interesting few months for PlayStation Plus, although not everything has been positive. While the latest PS Plus Essentials line-up features the excellent Streets of Rage 4, the other PS4 and PS5 games are a touch forgettable. On the plus side, however, Sony made EA Sports FC 24 free to download for a longer period of time, which is great now that the Euro 2024 update is live. Likewise, it was probably the weakest month in memory for the Essentials line-up, plus blockbuster open-world action game GTA 5 was removed from the service as part of the latest refresh. Still, PS Plus Premium finally added PSVR 2 games to the line-up, so that’s a massive step in the right direction. After such a topsy-turvy few weeks for PS Plus, fans will be hoping Sony gets back on track with a stronger selection of PlayStation Plus Essentials for July. Unfortunately, however, we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out for sure.
Indeed, PlayStation Plus subscribers will be disappointed to hear that the July 2024 free PS4 and PS5 games won’t be announced until next week.
The PS Plus Essentials will be officially revealed by Sony at 4.30pm BST UK time on the afternoon of June 26.
Even worse, the games won’t actually be available to download and install until the morning of July 2.
Needless to say, Daily Express will be back this weekend with a full list of PS Plus Essentials predictions, and here’s hoping we do a better job than last month!
Very few people would have successfully picked out any of the games in the line-up, which include the aforementioned Streets of Rage 4, AEW Fight Forever and SpongeBob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shake.
Streets of Rage 4 is undoubtedly the pick of the bunch, featuring an epic campaign, lots of characters and even more unlockables.
I would also recommend grabbing the Mr X Nightmare DLC, which adds an ultra-addictive survival mode to the game.
The Survival mode tasks players with playing through short, single-screen stages packed with lots of enemies, obstacles and occasional boss battles.
At the end of each stage you can choose an upgrade, which include things like elemental attacks and dash moves, double jumps and damage resistance.
You can select either a random survival simulation featuring different upgrades, enemies and locations each time, or the weekly simulation that’s the same for everybody.
AEW Fight Forever is probably the weakest game on the list, especially if you’re not a fan of wrestling.
While it’s not in the same league as the latest WWE 2K game, I personally think it’s a solid if unspectacular first effort for the upstart company.
It is, however, lacking some of the bells and whistles we’ve come to associate with big-budget wrestling games, and lacks the depth of its WWE rival, particularly when it comes to the roster and certain character creation features.
Then there’s SpongeBob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shake, which is a solid 3D platformer with an unsurprisingly colourful art style and fun sense of humour.
All of the games will be available to download until the morning of July 2, so make sure you add them to your library before they leave the service.
