Shrek 5 release date, cast, plot and latest news from Mike Myers

It has been almost 15 years since Shrek Forever After, the fourth Shrek movie, hit cinemas with the tagline The Final Chapter.

But now DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures have announced that Shrek 5 is in production.

It’s unclear if this will be the official title, but personally, we’re hoping it will simply be called 5hrek.

Nevertheless, what we do know is that original cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will be reprising their roles as Shrek, Donkey and Princess Fiona.

It’s not clear at this stage if Antonia Banderas will return as Puss in Boots after his critically acclaimed last outing, The Last Wish. Yet, given that the film concluded with him returning to Far Far Away, we’d be surprised if he didn’t.

Shrek 5 is being penned by Michael McCullers, who is new to the franchise but penned the last two Austin Powers movies for Myers, giving us hope for some zany comedy. Meanwhile, Walt Dohrn, director of the Trolls movies, is helming Shrek 5, having previously worked as a writer on the last two movies. He also voices Rumpelstiltskin in the franchise alongside various other characters.

Little about the plot is known; however, we would expect Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and Dragon’s kids to all be teenagers by now. The studio has previously teased that the filmmakers will “look at what the core elements are the audience have loved [and try to] honour those elements” much like The Super Mario Bros Movie.

Speaking recently with Vulture, Myers shared the latest news: “I have [started work on Shrek 5]. But I don’t get to see [Eddie and Cameron] until later. I love Donkey so much. I want Donkey to live in my house. I love that character, and I kind of enjoy not seeing Eddie, although he’s hilarious and lovely and very nice, a generous human being. I love Donkey so much that seeing and hearing him gets me excited. Then I see Eddie at the press junkets and stuff, and it’s fun. He’s a cool dude. Cooler than I’ll ever be.” A Donkey spin-off is also in the works.

Shrek 5 is set to release in cinemas on July 1, 2026.
