Sir Elton John won’t let the sun go down on writing new songs

Sir Elton John has revealed he is working on new songs despite having quit touring and suffering a severe infection that has left him unable to see out of his right eye.

The Rocket Man, 77, says he has been in the recording studio as “the juices have never dried up”.

And the legendary entertainer adds he has never been happier than he is today due to his “fantastic family”.

He took some time off from music after finishing his epic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour in July, which grossed more than £700mlliion.

But Sir Elton said: “You will be getting some more [music]. The juices have never dried up.

“They never want to dry up because I’m always looking to create things. It’s just having the space now to do it at my own time. Of course there will be new Elton John music.”

The veteran star reflected on his recent medical woes, from knee replacements to being unable to see properly any more.

“I have never been healthier. I have a little problem with the eyes but compared to most people I am the luckiest man in the world. I am very, very happy.”

Sir Elton says he is still staggered by how he came up with his back catalogue of hits, given he was never with lyricist Bernie Taupin, 74.

“I write to lyrics. When I see the written word I get an idea in my head,” he said. “If I choose the title, or if I read through the lyrics, I say, ‘that’s the one’, it just sets me off.

“God knows how I do it. Bernie and I had written songs and never been in the same room.”
