Surprisingly good Ubisoft shooter is free until the end of July

When Ubisoft announced plans to release a game based on the Avatar movies, I naturally assumed it would be rubbish. It’s not that The Division developer Massive Entertainment is incapable of making a great game, it’s just that licensed releases have traditionally been sloppy, rushed and underbaked. Fortunately, however, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora is actually pretty decent. It’s not particularly groundbreaking, but a combination of stunning visuals and satisfying combat makes it well worth checking out. If like me you skipped this one at launch, then the good news is that you can try it for yourself, and without spending any cash.

Available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora’s free trial runs from now until July 28.

There are, however, a few restrictions, most notably that you can only play for a maximum of five hours, and you can’t play beyond The Aranahe Clan mission from the main campaign.

Still, if you do decide to purchase the game in full once the trial comes to an end, then your progression will carry over, meaning you can resume where you left off.

Furthermore, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora is on sale over on the Xbox and PlayStation digital storefronts.

On PlayStation, the Standard Edition is available for £34.99, while the Ultimate Edition is reduced to £57.49.

Over on Xbox, the Deluxe Edition costs £37.49, while the Ultimate Edition (which comes with the Season Pass) is available for £57.49.

Ubisoft’s Avatar game is a first-person action adventure release set in the Western Frontier of Pandora.

“Abducted by the human militaristic corporation known as the RDA, you, a Na’vi, were trained and molded to serve their purpose,” reads the official description.

“Fifteen years later, you are free, but find yourself a stranger in your birthplace. Reconnect with your lost heritage, discover what it truly means to be Na’vi, and join other clans to protect Pandora from the RDA.”

The game features customisation elements, as well as a variety of different combat styles. You can pick off enemies using your bow and spear-thrower, or use human weaponry like rifles and shotguns.

One of the highlights of the game is the ability to explore Pandora from the skies, as you unlock your own personal banshee.
