With streaming libraries constantly shifting, it’s easy to miss out on some of the best films out there. But not this time.

April is shaping up to be an incredible month for movie fans, but while we wait for the full list of new releases, it’s time to revisit some of the best titles on Netflix‘s lineup that includes everything from pulse-pounding action to Oscar-winning dramas.

Whether you want to rewatch old favourites, experience the biggest blockbusters of recent years, or dive into critically acclaimed masterpieces, this list has you covered.

Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

Starring Tom Cruise in his most iconic role, this long-awaited sequel sees Pete “Maverick” Mitchell back in action, training a new generation of elite fighter pilots for a near-impossible mission. The film expertly balances nostalgia with breathtaking aerial combat sequences, made all the more thrilling by the fact that Cruise and his co-stars actually underwent extensive flight training to make the action feel as real as possible.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick became one of the highest-grossing films of the year and even scored an Academy Award for Best Sound.

Society of the Snow (2023)

Society of the Snow delivers one of the most gripping survival stories ever seen on film. Based on the 1972 Andes plane crash events, J.A. Bayona’s harrowing drama follows the Uruguayan rugby team stranded in the mountains, forced to make impossible choices to stay alive.

The film is a stunning and unflinching look at human endurance, featuring jaw-dropping cinematography that immerses you in the freezing hellscape of the Andes. Bayona, known for The Impossible and A Monster Calls, brings his signature emotional weight to the story.

The Killer (2023)

In David Fincher’s The Killer, a professional assassin, known only as “The Killer,” embarks on a brutal revenge mission after a botched hit forces him to confront his employers and the world he thought he understood. It stars Michael Fassbender as the cold, calculating assassin based on the French graphic novel Le Tueur.

While it may not have the explosive action of a typical hitman movie, it’s an intense character study that goes deep into a man’s mind, facing events that lead him to confront his morality.

Parasite (2019)

For those who still haven’t seen Parasite – or want to experience its brilliance again – now is as good of a time to stream Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning masterpiece. The story follows the struggling Kim family, who con their way into the lives of the wealthy Park family, only for things to spiral into chaos.

A shocking social satire wrapped in a suspenseful thriller, Parasite became the first non-English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. In addition to the main prize, it also won Oscars for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film, as well as multiple international cinema accolades.

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

All Quiet on the Western Front is a stunning adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s classic semi-autobiographical anti-war novel that follows young German soldiers, including Paul Bäumer, during World War I. This German production captures the horror and futility of the war like few films before it, following a young soldier who quickly learns that the battlefield is nothing like the patriotic fantasy he once imagined.

It became Germany’s submission for Best International Feature at the Oscars and won four Academy Awards, including Best Cinematography. The book had previously been adapted into a 1930 American film, which won the Best Picture Oscars at the time, a 1979 CBS television film and even a 1982 song by Elton John.

Extraction 2 (2023)

For action fans, Extraction 2 brings back Chris Hemsworth’s mercenary, Tyler Rake, in an even more explosive sequel. Directed by Sam Hargrave and produced by the Russo brothers (Avengers: Endgame), this instalment raises the stakes with a jaw-dropping 12-minute continuous action sequence that reportedly took at least 4 months to rehearse and 29 days to shoot.

The first Extraction was a massive hit for NetflNetflix and scored 79% on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Now, Extraction 3 is in development as an eight-episode series starring Omar Sy.

Four Lions (2010)

Switching to an absurdist comedy, Chris Morris’ satire about a group of inept British jihadists is hilarious and biting, offering a darkly comedic take on extremism.

Riz Ahmed shines in the lead role, delivering a performance that balances absurdity with a genuine portrayal of his character’s layers. Thanks to Morris’ razor-sharp script, the film blends comedy and tragedy.

Submarine (2010)

Richard Ayoade’s debut feature is a coming-of-age tale that follows the awkward and precocious 15-year-old Oliver Tate as he navigates the complexities of teenage romance, family drama, and self-discovery in 1980s Wales, all while trying to control the narrative of his life.

Featuring a killer soundtrack by Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys fame, Submarine was well-received upon release, drawing comparisons to Wes Anderson’s style.

Harry Potter series (2001-2011)

For those craving nostalgia, the Harry Potter series is also streaming, allowing fans to revisit Hogwarts in all its magical glory. Whether watching for the first time or reliving the saga, the journey from The Sorcerer’s Stone to The Deathly Hallows remains one of the most immersive cinematic experiences ever created.

Inglorious Basterds (2009)

Blending historical fiction with Quentin Tarantino’s signature dialogue and brutal action, the film follows a group of Jewish-American soldiers led by Lt. Aldo Raine, who plots to assassinate Nazi leaders. At the same time, a Jewish cinema owner, Shosanna Dreyfus, seeks revenge on the Nazis for her family’s murder.

Christoph Waltz delivers a widely praised performance as Col Hans Landa, a role that earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor – marking Inglorious Basterds as the first Tarantino film to win an Oscar for acting.

The Irishman (2019)

Rounding out the list is The Irishman, Martin Scorsese’s epic crime saga that reunites legends Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci in a sprawling tale of loyalty, power, and regret. Using groundbreaking de-aging technology, the film spans decades and chronicles the rise and fall of mob hitman Frank Sheeran.

At over three and a half hours, it rewards patient viewers with some of the best acting performances of film industry icons —no wonder it was nominated for ten Academy Awards.
