Top Gun 3 director teases ‘ambitious’ Tom Cruise threequel

Four decades after the original, Tom Cruise returned as Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick to critical acclaim.

The legacy sequel about the US Navy pilot ended up as the highest-grossing film of his career to date, with almost $1.5 billion garnered at the global box office.

It’s no wonder, then, that Top Gun 3 is in the works with screenwriter Ehren Kruger and director Joseph Kosinski returning.

In fact, Warner Bros and Apple hired them to attempt to repeat their success for Brad Pitt’s F1: The Movie, although with less appeal.

Nevertheless, Kosinski has shared an update on the upcoming threequel.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Kosinski said: “Ehren Kruger is writing the script as we speak. It’s a big idea that I spent almost a year developing — working with some friends at the Navy and Lockheed. And yeah, Ehren’s into it now, so we’ll see how it comes along. It was about coming up with an idea that — again — felt like a new challenge. Something that opens up the story in a way you just can’t let go. And I think the idea is so ambitious. That’s what’s exciting to me.”
