Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday (April 29, 2025) announced a cash prize of ₹10 lakh for the 14-year-old Indian Premier League (IPL) player Vaibhav Suryavanshi for scoring century in 35 balls.
He became the youngest centurion in men’s Twenty20 cricket on Monday and guided Rajasthan Royals to an eight wicket victory over Gujrat Titans in Jaipur at Sawai Mansingh Stadium.
Mr. Kumar called and congratulated the teenager who hails from Samastipur district of Bihar.
In his congratulatory message Mr. Kumar said, “Vaibhav Suryavanshi has become a new hope for Indian cricket on the strength of his hard work and talent. Everyone is proud of him. I wish that Vaibhav Suryavanshi creates new records for the Indian team in the future and brings glory to the country.”
Suryavanshi had met the Chief Minister on December 12, 2024 at CM house when he was purchased by Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.10 crore during the IPL 2025 auction.
Many current and legendary players like Sachin Tendulkar praised the young player on social media. Even Team Indian captain Rohit Sharma also praised the teenage prodigy.
In a social media message on ‘X’, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also praised him saying, “Congratulations and best wishes to Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who scored a century at the youngest age. Every Bihari is proud of Vaibhav Suryavanshi ji. The NDA government stands with athletes at every step.”
Even Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav heaped praise on him on ‘X’, “Proud of our own Bihari Boy Vaibhav Suryavanshi..14 years old became the second fastest century in IPL history, keep it up.”
Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) president Rakesh Kumar Tiwari also did not miss the opportunity to congratulate Mr. Suryavanshi.
Mr. Tiwari said that he has brought laurels to Bihar by hitting a century in just 35 balls and becoming the youngest player to do so. He also thanked Rajasthan Royals chairman Ranjit Barthakur and head coach Rahul Dravid for giving him an opportunity to play for the team.
Senior Janata Dal -(United) leader and minister, Vijay Kumar Choudhary who also hails from Samastipur said that he has created history by scoring a century in IPL at the age of 14.
“Vaibhav has made Bihar proud by performing brilliantly on the field. We are proud of promising young players like Vaibhav. The Chief Minister had met him and his father in 2024, and it was then that his talent was glimpsed,”Mr. Choudhary said in the social media post on ‘X’.
