Confidence not an issue for Scorchers as Renegades await

English import Keaton Jennings says Perth Scorchers will “turn up, show up and puff their chests” as they look to bounce back from a tough defeat in Hobart.

The men in orange suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday, thanks largely to a rampant century from Hurricanes all-rounder Mitch Owen.

But they have had barely a day to review the eight-wicket defeat at Ninja Stadium as they head to Melbourne for a pre-Christmas date with the Renegades on Monday night.

Owen made light work of the Scorchers’ highly-touted battery of fast bowlers on a tricky deck, belting an unbeaten 101 from 64 balls.

However, Jennings said despite the comprehensive-appearing result, there were only “slight margins” in the overall contest.

“I thought some of our balls we absolutely nailed, and there was a little inside nick that went for four or two, balls that just dropped short in the field or just carried far enough for them, so I don’t think it was all doom and gloom,” he told The West Australian.

“I think it was slight margins from one player that made a difference, and we’ve got a serious set of quicks.

“But we’ve got to bounce back quickly. We’re off to Melbourne (on Sunday) to play again, so the boys will debrief and come in nice and strong. Come Melbourne.

“T20 lends itself to being brave. I think you’ve got to turn up, show up and puff your chest up regardless of what’s happened previously, whether it’s a win or a loss.”

Jennings started the day in promising fashion, hitting 35 from 28 in his second Big Bash dig as well as combining with West Australian star Josh Inglis for a 58-run stand.

But the Englishman said his sights were firmly set on team success.

“I’ve always been quite big on team focus,” he said.

“I’d much rather have a poor day personally and come away with a win.

“I think when you’ve played for a period of time, you learn that it’s not necessarily your own performance that actually keeps you happy. It is being in an environment that’s upbeat, winning and really successful.”
