Record-breaking cricket sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed England Under-19s for 143 in a stunning display of batting against players five years his senior. The 14-year-old hit headlines earlier this year after becoming the youngest player and century-maker in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Suryavanshi has been tipped for a huge future by some of cricket’s biggest names. His latest remarkable feat has broken yet another record. Needing just 52 deliveries to bag three figures, the teenager has taken a 12-year-old record for the fastest century in youth one-day internationals. Despite being the youngest player in either India’s or England’s squads, Suryavanshi looked the best player on the pitch.
Opening the batting, Suryavanshi breezed 13 fours and 10 sixes in his 78 deliveries to contribute significantly to a score of 363-9. He has already been tipped for a senior India debut, although national team coaches are reportedly keen to protect him from media scrutiny at such a young age.
Suryavanshi was signed by the Rajasthan Royals for a staggering £105,000 when he was still only 13. The Royals won a fierce bidding war to land his signature.
India’s most exciting prospect soon scored his first IPL century and said afterwards: “It is a very good feeling. It’s my first hundred in the IPL and it’s my third innings. The result has shown here after the practice before the tournament. I just see the ball and play.
“Batting with [Yashasvi] Jaiswal is good, he tells me what to do and he infuses positive things. It has been a dream to get a 100 in the IPL and today it materialised. There is no fear. I don’t think much, I just focus on playing.”
However, Suryavanshi has been warned about keeping his feet on the ground. Former India star Virender Sehwag said earlier this year: “I have seen many players who come, get fame from one or two matches, then they do not do anything, because they think that they have become a star player.
“Look at Virat Kohli. He started at 19 and has now played all 18 IPL seasons. That’s what Vaibhav should aim for. But if he thinks he’s made it just because he hit a six off his first ball and earned a crore, he might not be around next season.”
