Graham Thorpe was ‘seriously ill’ in health battle two years before tragic death

Former England cricket star Graham Thorpe has tragically passed away at the age of 55, two years after being hospitalised while “seriously ill”. He had been battling illness since May 2022.

Thorpe, who represented England in 100 Test matches and notably scored an impressive double century against New Zealand in 2002, was a Surrey cricket stalwart, serving his home county for over 15 years before transitioning into coaching and commentary roles.

In 2022, Thorpe’s health deteriorated, leading to him being put in hospital. The Professional Cricketers’ Association released a statement upon his family’s request: “Graham Thorpe has recently fallen seriously ill and is currently in hospital receiving treatment,” the statement said.

“His prognosis is unclear at this stage and we ask for privacy for him and his family at this time. Our thoughts are with Graham and his family.”

As the sporting world mourns his passing two years on, tributes for the beloved sportsman have been pouring in. Thorpe, who was set to coach Afghanistan before his illness, has been remembered especially within the Surrey CCC community and by past team-mates.

Oli Slipper, Surrey CCC chair, expressed deep sadness at Thorpe’s passing: “Graham is one of the great sons of Surrey and there is an overwhelming sadness that he will not walk through the gates of the Oval again.

“He is a legend of Surrey and brought great pride to the Club wearing both the Three Feathers and the Three Lions.” He made outstanding contributions to the Club as a cricketer, and as a man, and he will be so sorely missed.”

“It is with great sadness that the ECB shares the news that Graham Thorpe, MBE, has passed away,” read a statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) following the loss of Thorpe.

“There seem to be no appropriate words to describe the deep shock we feel at Graham’s death.”

“More than one of England’s finest-ever batters, he was a beloved member of the cricket family and revered by fans all over the world. His skill was unquestioned, and his abilities and achievements across a 13-year international career brought so much happiness to his teammates and England and Surrey CCC supporters alike.

“Later, as a coach, he guided the best England Men’s talent to some incredible victories across all formats of the game.”

The cricket world is in mourning as Thorpe leaves behind his wife Amanda and their four children Henry, Amelia, Kitty and Emma.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan was among the players to post tributes. “RIP Thorpey .. Thanks for all the advice throughout my career,” Vaughan wrote.

“You were a great player and a brilliant team-mate. You have gone far too young but you leave as an England cricket legend … Thoughts with all who knew Thorpey and to all the family.”
