A weekend of resistance awaits Washington Sundar. The all-rounder along with the lower-order have the onerous task of whittling down India’s current deficit of 310 runs against Australia in the fourth Test in progress here at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Speaking to the media on Friday (December 27, 2024), Washington said: “We were in a great position to get big runs, especially when Viratbhai and Yash (Jaiswal) were batting. But we will still come back and continue to fight. The energy is very good in the dressing room, we are all positive. There are still three days, a lot of overs to play, so it will just be about us trying to fight really hard and get things done for the team.”

Queried about the pitch, the off-spinner replied: “It will be a good surface to bat on. I think the wicket wouldn’t change much, so it will be an exciting couple of days.”

Stepping into R. Ashwin’s shoes, Washington spoke about his discussions with the former: “Had a lot of conversations with Ash, especially in terms of conditions in Australia. He gave me a lot of insight and it definitely helped me.”

Picked both for his spin and batting, the all-rounder felt that the team’s faith has to be repaid: “Isn’t it amazing that the team wants me to do really well in all aspects of the game? That’s a great opportunity for me. No matter the game situation I get to be in, it’s just about being out there, putting in the right energy and getting things done for the team.”
