Jhye’s Aussie squad call-up as Konstas elevation confirmed

West Australian quick Jhye Richardson has earned a surprise call-up ahead of the Boxing Day Test, added to the Australian squad on Friday.

It comes as embattled opener Nathan McSweeney was dropped, opening the door for teenage sensation Sam Konstas to make his debut in the fourth Test against India.

With injured pace ace Josh Hazlewood ruled out of the series with a calf injury, set to be replaced by Scott Boland at the MCG, selectors have added more fast bowling depth to assist Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.

Konstas and Richardson were joined in the squad by New South Wales paceman Sean Abbott, while back-up wicketkeeper Josh Inglis and all-rounder Beau Webster retained their spots.

Chairman of selectors George Bailey said the squad provided options for how the team will structure the XI for the final two Tests of the series, acknowledging the top order has failed to perform.

“Sam gets a call up to the Test squad for the first time. His style of batting offers a point of difference and we look forward to watching his game develop further,” Bailey said.
