Lehmann on cusp of Shield fairytale

Jake Lehmann is on the cusp of recreating his father’s heroics after his century in the Sheffield Shield final gave South Australia a commanding 176-run first-innings lead.

Lehmann was dismissed for 126 with the final ball before lunch on day two as his side was bowled out for 271 at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide on Thursday.

The home side dominated on day one, dismissing Queensland for just 95 in their first dig – the third-lowest total by any team when batting first in a Sheffield Shield final.

After SA resumed at 6-158 on day two, Lehmann went about stamping his authority on the game.

After being 42 overnight, he continued his fine form as he brought up his third century in as many Shield matches.

It shapes as a feel-good story should SA now convert their strong lead into the state’s first Shield victory in 29 years.

Lehmann was just three when his dad Darren lifted the trophy in 1996 following their famous draw with Western Australia.

Pictures from that game captured a young Lehmann sitting on his father’s knee as he posed with the trophy.

The hometown hero brought up his century off just 132 balls when he cut Marnus Labuschagne.

Lehmann put on an 85-run partnership with Nathan McAndrew (39), who was out when he nicked Jack Wildermuth to first slip.

Queensland produced a mini fightback just before lunch after Brendan Doggett went for a duck as Jack Wildermuth (3-39) struck for the second time in one over.

Lehmann was finally out with the last ball before lunch after skying Mark Steketee to Ben McDermott.
