Rain delays Australia’s Champions Trophy clash with SA

Rain has delayed the start of Australia’s Champions Trophy clash with South Africa at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Pakistan.

The covers were out when the toss was meant to take place for Tuesday’s match, and it remains to be seen when play will be able to get underway.

The match looms as crucial to both side’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

Australia started their campaign with a thrilling five-wicket win over England, chasing down the victory target of 352 with 15 balls to spare.

Josh Inglis was the hero in that match, crunching an unbeaten 120 off 86 balls after Australia had slipped to 4-136.

Another positive to come out of the clash was a return to form for Marnus Labuschagne, who scored 47 off 45 and also took 2-41 with the ball.

Wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who was selected as a batter-only due to the presence of Inglis in the side, made an important 69 off 63 balls.

Carey also snared three catches in the field, including a one-handed blinder at mid-on to dismiss opener Phil Salt for 10.

South Africa also started their tournament on a winning note, posting 6-315 in a 107-run victory over Afghanistan.

Australia take on Afghanistan in their final match of the group stage on Friday.

If rain washes out the Australia-South Africa match completely, it would be a big boost to England’s hopes of finishing in the top two of the group.
