Manchester United want to sign Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo alongside their efforts to recruit Matheus Cunha from Wolves this summer, according to reports. But on Sunday, Alejandro Garnacho sent a clear warning to Ruben Amorim about the talent he could lose if the Premier League duo arrive and take his place.
United suffered their 16th defeat in an abysmal league season against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium to confirm a bottom-half finish. A Luke Shaw own goal, Kevin Schade brace and Yoanne Wissa strike blew the visitors away after Mason Mount broke the deadlock in the first half. Garnacho and Amad injected life into United late on, but both their goals proved to be only a consolation in a 4-3 loss.
Mbeumo wasn’t Brentford’s stand-out performer, but young left-wing-back Harry Amass struggled to get the measure of him, and he provided the assist for Schade’s second.
Moments before kick-off, the Telegraph reported that United are preparing to join Premier League rivals in the race to sign the 25-year-old this summer.
The Red Devils are set to be active to hand Ruben Amorim the squad revamp he desperately needs, and his attack is a primary focus.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Cunha is in advanced talks over an Old Trafford switch, with United ready to pay his £63m release clause in instalments.
But the Telegraph claim the interest in Mbeumo, valued at £60m, is independent of the Brazilian’s likely arrival.
Garnacho’s future is already uncertain amid questions over whether he fits into Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, considering he would ideally like to use two narrow forwards behind a striker.
The 20-year-old winger was the subject of interest from Napoli and Chelsea in January, and he will be linked with an exit again this summer.
Cunha’s arrival alone would spark speculation. Mbeumo following him through the door would spring Garnacho’s role under Amorim next season into serious debate.
Both of the Argentine’s goal contributions were superb. His drilled delivery with his weaker foot on the left flank to set up Mount’s tap-in was unstoppable.
As was the powerful long-range effort that he rifled home after some silky step-overs and a one-two with Christian Eriksen.
Garnacho has now plundered 11 goals and 10 assists in all competitions, increasing his output in a second successive season.
United need to upgrade their attack, but they must sacrifice Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and even Rasmus Hojlund before Garnacho.
