Ruben Amorim took the responsibility of Manchester United’s 0-3 loss to Bournemouth at home and refused to attribute the defeat to his side’s failure to defend set pieces.
“We didn’t lose because of set pieces, we lost because we didn’t score the chances we created, just like against Tottenham,” Amorim told reporters after the match.
Bournemouth’s first goal came from a free kick, which was the 17th goal United conceded from set pieces in this calendar year in the league (barring penalties). When asked whether he would reconsider tasking his assistant coach Carlos Fernandes with heading the side’s defensive tactics during set pieces, the Portuguese coach took the blame.
“The responsibility is on me, not on Carlos or anyone. We are a team in good moments, bad moments, we have a way of doing things,” Amorim said.
This loss left United languishing in 13th with 22 points, nine from the top four.
“We have to improve. We have to score our goals and not concede so many goals.
When we start the game, we are already anxious. Everybody in the stadium. It’s really tough for them (suppprters) but we are fighting through. We will try to do it in the next game,” he said.
United next faces Wolves on Boxing day.
