Ange Postecoglou breaks silence on Mathys Tel as £50m Spurs move gathers pace

Ange Postecoglou kept his cards close to his chest over Tottenham’s move for Mathys Tel after reportedly agreeing a £50million deal with Bayern Munich.

Reports in France emerged on Thursday claiming that Spurs had lodged a late bid for the 19-year-old to help solve their current injury crisis, with five attacking players currently sidelined with injury.

Tel has also been heavily linked with Chelsea and Manchester United during the January transfer window. But Spurs’ urgent need for signings before the transfer deadline on February 3 has seen them make a tempting offer.

The youngster is understood to be considering his options in the final days of the window, with several European teams interested in snapping up the France Under-21 international.

When asked directly about if Spurs have held talks with the Bundesliga giants about signing Tel, Postecoglou refused to divulge any further information on their apparent interest.

“I can’t tell you anything about Tel,” Postecoglou said, after watching his side beat Elfsborg 3-0 on Thursday in the Europa League.

“I am focusing on getting the team ready [to face Brentford on Thursday]… other people are working in the background.”

Tel is yet to score for the Bundesliga giants this season in 13 appearances in all competitions, although he has only been afforded two league starts by head coach Vincent Kompany.

The teenager joined Bayern in a £25m deal in 2022 but has seen his first-team opportunities blocked since Harry Kane arrived at the Allianz Arena.

Tel informed Bayern officials of his desire to leave – either in a loan deal or permanent exit – and Spurs’ sizeable offer has forced their rivals to consider joining the chase.

Chelsea were linked with the French starlet earlier in the window, with a potential swap deal involving Christopher Nkunku weighed up. But their interest in the 27-year-old has cooled, while the Blues have moved onto targeting Alejandro Garnacho.

And that could allow Spurs a free run at snapping up Tel in the final days of the window.

Tel, who appeared in Bayern’s 3-1 win over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League on Wednesday, was also tight-lipped when he was quizzed on his future by Sky Germany. Asked about a potential transfer, Tel simply told Sky Germany: “I don’t know.”

Tottenham have reportedly made enquiries for several players after choosing to back Postecoglou this month, despite a poor run of form that has seen them lose eight out of 10 league matches.

They have been linked with Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Southampton wonderkid Tyler Dibling this month.

But the Australian may have been given food for thought after watching youngsters Dane Scarlett, 20, Damola Ajayi, 19, and Mikey Moore, 17, score against Elfsborg.
