Ally McCoist has claimed that Ange Postecoglou might still quit Tottenham if he secures Europa League glory for the club. Despite facing massive criticism for a lacklustre domestic campaign, the Australian’s team have reached the final of the second-tier European competition.
Manchester United are the team standing in Tottenham‘s way of breaking their trophyless streak, which extends back to 2008. The two clubs will compete for Europa League glory and a place in next season’s Champions League when they face off in the final in Bilbao later this month.
Postecoglou has consistently maintained that he is the right person to guide Tottenham, citing his track record of always securing silverware in his second season at any club.
He is still on course to achieve this goal, but the conclusion of his first season was tainted by suggestions that they should lose to Manchester City towards the end of that season. This would have dashed their own top four aspirations but also thwarted Arsenal‘s title hopes – an idea that came true and did not sit well with a furious Postecoglou.
McCoist has questioned the ambition of the club in light of some fans making such pleas, and the ex-striker thinks that Postecoglou might view it as mission accomplished and then depart if he can succeed where Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte fell short – by clinching a trophy for the club.
Speaking to talkSPORT BET, he said: “Something tells me that if Ange Postecoglou wins Tottenham the Europa League, he’ll say he’s done his job and call it a day at Spurs,” he said. “I hope he stays, but I’m not sure he wants to. It’s just a hunch, I’ve got no idea what Ange will do, but I just have a feeling he’ll move on after delivering on his promise of winning a trophy in his second season – that is, if he does win it!
“I was reminded of last season when Spurs needed to lose to Manchester City in order to stop Arsenal from potentially winning the title. A lot of Spurs fans wanted to throw that game away, in contrast to Ange, who held the belief of trying to win every game possible, no matter its implications on other teams. I think that’s when he got a glimpse of the mindset. Whatever way you look at it, it’s a small club mentality!”.
The dissatisfaction among Tottenham supporters with the club’s leadership, most notably Daniel Levy, has been palpable following their most disappointing domestic campaign in almost two decades. But Postecoglou has also come in for immense criticism following an astonishing 19 league defeats.
However, Postecoglou remains unfazed and maintains that his team has earned their place as European finalists.
“I mean, who cares if we’re struggling in the league? It’s a separate thing. It’s got nothing to do with league form,” he remarked defiantly. “I couldn’t care less who’s struggling and who’s not. I think both us and Manchester United have earned the right to be there.”
