Arsenal may need a favour from Jurgen Klopp in order to bring in one of Mikel Arteta’s transfer targets. The former Liverpool boss dealt the Gunners plenty of blows during his time on Merseyside, but now he has a different role at Red Bull and is a major player in the transfer sphere.
Klopp is now the head of global soccer for Red Bull, overseeing their operations in Leipzig, Salzburg, New York and Bragantino. But his dealings with the Bundesliga side will be of interest to Arsenal and Chelsea.
And if Arsenal want to push forward and beat their rivals to Simons’ signature, they’ll have to act fast.
The Club World Cup champions may need to offload players in order to free up funds for Simons, while Arsenal could swoop immediately if they decide he is the player to take them closer to the title.
Chelsea want nine players competing for their attacking positions in the coming season as they return to the Champions League and intend for Simons to play alongside Cole Palmer as two number 10s.
But any move for Simons, Alejandro Garnacho, Morgan Rogers or Fermin Lopez, likely requires a significant outgoing in order to continue compliance with the league’s profit and sustainability rules.
Christian Nkunku and Joao Felix are expected to leave, but there has not been significant movement, while Jackson and Tyrique George could still leave.
But if Klopp wants a deal done swiftly, he could do Arsenal a favour in the meantime and sell Simons to Arteta instead.
