Chelsea talisman Cole Palmer could recover from his muscular injury in time to face Tottenham after the international break, according to reports. The 22-year-old picked up a knock in training before the Blues were beaten by Arsenal last weekend. His absence from the squad initially came as a surprise before it was confirmed that he had been ruled out due to injury.
It has stopped Palmer from joining up with the England squad for the upcoming international fixtures against Albania and Latvia. His injury does not appear to be a significant one, though, with the forward reportedly set to make a speedy return to action. Chelsea are holding out hope that he will be fit enough to play against Tottenham on April 2, according to the Daily Mail.
The report states that Palmer is due to undergo a second scan on his lower leg injury, which will provide a clearer recovery timeline. He previously had a scan following Chelsea‘s defeat to Arsenal, with Enzo Maresca confirming the news after the match.
“His injury was from yesterday’s session, it’s a muscular problem,” said the Blues manager. “He needs a scan and it is planned for tomorrow morning. I hope he can be back for our next game, but we need to wait for a scan.
“We don’t wish players injury, but probably in Cole’s case in this moment it will give him some rest, physically and mentally, it could be good.”
If all goes well behind the scenes, Palmer could be available to play when Premier League football returns after the international break. It has been a demanding season for the Chelsea ace, who had started every single league game prior to the Arsenal defeat.
He has scored 14 times in all competitions but is currently experiencing a dry spell, having failed to find the net in any of his last 10 matches. Maresca recently said he was not worried about Palmer’s lack of form, tipping him to bounce back quickly.
“I am not concerned about him,” insisted Maresca. “I am always concerned about general performances, but not Cole because Cole is a human being and always during a season he can have some moments where he struggles a little bit more.
“Every game we expect a goal or an assist, but it is difficult. In this moment his team performance reflects the team’s that he struggles to score goals. We need to be more clinical when we get chances.
“Cole is just frustrated that we are not winning games. It is nothing more than that. The problem with Cole is we rely on Cole for everything. I have said since the start we need to rely on the team for everything.”
