The mother of former Manchester United star Brandon Williams hopes he can rekindle his football career after his recent struggles. The defender pleaded guilty to dangerous driving earlier this month and could face up to two years in prison.
On March 14, Chester Crown Court heard that Williams crashed his car at 99mph. He had earlier been filmed with a balloon in his mouth. Richard Littler KC, defending, told the court there was a “mental health aspect” to the case, revealing Williams had “lost” his career and a relationship. The 24-year-old will be sentenced on May 9.
His mother, Lisa Wood, told the Daily Mail that she “hopes” Williams can reignite his football career. But she added: “I can’t say anything else.”
A neighbour told the publication: “I see him quite often with his mum. He’s a nice lad and really down to earth. His gran lives a few doors down, so they are a really close-knit family.
“Everyone knows him as the lad who played for United. I hope he gets back to playing soon.”
Williams was released from his reported £65,000 per-week contract at United last summer and failed to find a new club. Last season, he was part of Ipswich’s promotion-winning team, spending the year on loan. He also had a temporary spell with Norwich in 2022-23.
The United academy graduate, who made 51 first-team appearances, recently spoke about his struggle adapting to life as a Red Devils player. Williams made his debut under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019, soon after his 18th birthday and scored once in a victory over Sheffield United.
He told the More Than A Match YouTube channel: “It was difficult. You had family members you didn’t know was (sic) your family, friends you didn’t know was your mates. I am and always will still act who I am. I like to walk around Asda, do my shopping. I like to think of it as a little meditation, listening to the radio and getting all the bargains.
“I had someone come up to me and say, ‘What are you doing in here?’ I thought, ‘What do you mean, why can’t I be in here?’
“The limelight’s on you and the things I found hard was when I was out with my family and people are coming up to me and asking for photos. I’m about to eat my steak and someone’s come up for a picture. When I’m with my family, I’m with my family. That’s what I lost.”
