Garnacho heads for the tunnel after being subbed off, stirs controversy with Instagram story

Argentina forward Alejandro Garnacho created a controversy after he headed for the tunnel immediately after being subbed off in their Premier League match against Ipswich Town on Wednesday.

The Red Devils were reduced to 10 men when Patrick Dorgu was penalised with a red card for a challenge on Omari Hutchinson in the 43rd minute.

Their manager Ruben Amorim looked to shuffle the pack, bringing on Noussair Mazraoui for Garnacho – a move that Garnacho did not look too happy about.

After coming off, instead of going to the dugout, the 20-year-old left the field entirely, which was interpreted by some fans as an indication of a rift between the player and the manager. Garnacho’s Instagram story later fanned the fire as the photo showed him holding his nose.

However, the player had signalled a change of shirts after getting drenched in the pouring rain at Old Trafford Stadium.

Irrespective of what the reason was, Amorim was less happy with how the young forward handled being substituted in order for United to get more defensive players.

“It was cold, wet and rainy,” Amorim said. “The thing was we would play more in 5-3-1, then we make sub, we had to choose someone to go out. I had to think about set pieces, it was my choice.

“I am going to talk to Garnacho about it. You can ask me at the next press conference.”

United eventually went on to win the match, with defender Harry Maguire scoring the winning goal, two minutes into the second half.
