German hooligans hospitalise two police officers and attack England fans

German hooligans have allegedly left two police officers hospitalised after attacking England fans in Frankfurt. Two men are reported to have been arrested after the incident which followed the Three Lions’ 1-1 draw with Denmark at Euro 2024.

An England fan was reportedly thrown to the ground and had several items stolen from his possession. Police apprehended one of the men, aged 21, but he resisted and is claimed to have injured two police officers.

According to German publication Bild, the two officers were treated in hospital. No details have been provided over what their injuries were.

The second man, aged 19, was apprehended by police shortly after. Both men were arrested on suspicion of robbery, while the 21-year-old was arrested on suspicion of resisting law enforcement officers. Both men have since been freed, the report claims.

“An English fan was thrown to the ground and his fan paraphernalia was stolen. The suspects then fled,” a police spokeswoman said.

Plainclothes law enforcement officers are reported to have witnessed the two men attack England fans. However, there were few other incidents despite the Euro 2024 clash between the Three Lions and Denmark being deemed ‘high-risk’.

Many England fans hired e-scooters to tour around Frankfurt. It is reported that one man fell off his bike and suffered a serious head injury.

Three Lions supporters were well behaved before, during and after their game against Denmark. Footage emerged pre-match of a man diving into a water fountain, but there was little other trouble.

Fans inside Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park witnessed a hugely disappointing performance from Gareth Southgate’s side, but England still maintain control in Group C with four points. Harry Kane’s early goal was cancelled out by Morten Hjulmund.

England need to avoid defeat against Slovenia to advance to the knockout stage. But Southgate will be keen to make changes having overseen two underwhelming displays.

The England manager said: “We are disappointed with the two performances we’ve had so we’ve got to go and analyse that in depth and find some solutions to addressing the issues that we have.

“We know the level has to be higher. Maybe the biggest thing is we have to accept the environment that we’re in and the expectation around this.”
