Harry Maguire has been banned from driving and handed a hefty fine after being caught speeding two in three days.
Maguire won’t be allowed behind the wheel for 56 days after he was clocked doing 85mph in a 50mph near Manchester Airport.
The Manchester United ace was caught by a mobile speed camera in March 2024, just a couple of days after the Red Devils were beaten by local rivals Manchester City.
But it wasn’t the only time Maguire was caught speeding that week, as the England international was also clocked over the speed limit near his home city of Sheffield.
Maguire was booked on both occasions while driving his £200,000, 8-speed automatic Range Rover, which is said to be able to reach a top speed of 150mph.
He already had three points on his licence from another speeding incident in 2021 and was at risk of being banned from driving for six months, had the the magistrates handed him the maximum point penalty for the latest offence.
His defence solicitor, Gwyn Lewis, who appeared on Maguire’s behalf to answer the charges, asked magistrates at Bolton court for their discretion after the footballer pleaded guilty.
Mr Lewis asked for Maguire to be handed a temporary driving ban while admitting that he’d been going ‘too fast’ when driving on Wilmslow Road near Manchester Airport.
The solicitor added that it was ‘obviously excessive’, but he wasn’t driving in an area ‘where there could have been pedestrians’.
Mark Hardman, who was chairing the bench in court, said Maguire would be banned from driving for 56 days starting immediately and must pay a fine and court costs totalling to £1,052.
Lewis, who explained Maguire’s in-court absence, added: “Obviously my client is a wealthy individual,” when asked if he’d be able to pay the fine in full within 28 days.
Maguire had also been offered a speed awareness course but had been unable to attend the event in September as he was out of the country on holiday.
Hardman told the court: “In this case we are prepared to exercise our discretion due to Mr Maguire being out of the country and not being able to take part in his speed awareness course.”
Maguire, who has featured over 200 times for United since joining in 2019, played 90 minutes for the three-time European champions against Liverpool on Sunday.
United return to action at the weekend when they take on Arsenal in the FA Cup.
