Jadon Sancho ‘wants return to club’ as Man Utd future hangs in the balance

Jadon Sancho wants to return to Borussia Dortmund this summer, and the Bundesliga giants would welcome him back with open arms, according to former Germany international Didi Hamann. The Chelsea loanee could return to Manchester United at the end of the season if the Blues decide to pay a fee to breach their £25m obligation to buy him.

If Sancho leaves Stamford Bridge to join Ruben Amorim‘s ranks as part of the agreement, reportedly worth £5m, he would likely depart again. Dortmund would be candidates to re-sign the 25-year-old for a second time, having welcomed him back on loan in the latter half of last season. He initially thrived at the Westfalenstadion before leaving for Manchester in a £73m deal in 2021, arriving as one of Europe’s most exciting young wingers.

However, things haven’t gone to plan since, and there is a growing acceptance that he needs a fresh start away from the Premier League.

Dortmund could well be his next destination, with BILD claiming a return is Sancho’s dream outcome and that he has already instructed his representatives to orchestrate a move.

Hamann believes there is truth to those murmurs and that both parties would want to make it happen if Chelsea don’t sign Sancho permanently.

“Borussia Dortmund might just be looking at Jadon Sancho because although it started well at Chelsea, it looks like it hasn’t worked out,” the 51-year-old told PokerScout.

“It looks like Chelsea might pay millions to send him back to Manchester United, so it looks like he might be an option for Dortmund this summer.

“They tried to keep him last summer, but it wasn’t possible. I think he wants to go back.

“Dortmund wouldn’t be struggling like they are if he had stayed. He has been absolutely brilliant for them.

“He took Dortmund to the Champions League final last season, and I think they would have him in a heartbeat.”

Sancho has plundered 53 goals and 64 assists across 158 appearances across his career at the Black and Yellows, averaging an involvement every 1.4 games.

In contrast, the England international managed just 14 goals and 23 assists across 111 outings for United and Chelsea, averaging an involvement every three games in comparison.

At United alone, Sancho has registered 12 goals and six assists in 83 games. That’s an average of a contribution every 4.6 matches, not near the output expected of a £73m forward.

A parting of ways would suit all parties, and Dortmund could once again offer an out.
