Colombia national football team captain James Rodriguez has joined Mexico’s Liga MX side Club Leon from Rayo Vallecano on a free transfer, both teams announced on Monday.
According to local media reports, Rodriguez has signed a one-year contract with an option for another season.
The 33-year-old arrived at Rayo this term as a free agent for a second La Liga stint following an outstanding Copa America campaign in which Colombia lost in the final to Argentina.
“Rayo Vallecano de Madrid and Club Leon of Mexico have reached an agreement for the transfer of James Rodriguez,” the Spanish club said in a statement.
“From the club we wish James the best of luck in his new stage,” the club added.
It did not give any details of the deal.
Rodriguez turned heads at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil when he scored a jaw-dropping volley against Uruguay. With six goals, he won the Golden Boot and moved to Real Madrid that summer.
He played 125 times for Real Madrid, winning nine major trophies with it, including two UEFA Champions League titles, two European Super Cups and as many La Liga titles.
He then moved to Bayern Munich winning two Bundesliga titles but his club career plummeted since as he moved several clubs, including Everton in the Premier League to Al Rayyan in Qatar.
Eight-times Mexican champion Leon posted several images of Rodriguez on its social media accounts but also did not give any details of the deal.
