Jamie Vardy wants Premier League transfer as Leicester say ‘goodbye to the GOAT’

Jamie Vardy is set to wave farewell to Leicester City next month following a storied 13 years of service but has plans on remaining in the Premier League, unlike the Foxes. His spell at Leicester has been punctuated by lifting the Premier League and FA Cup trophies. The 38-year-old former England striker has confirmed he will depart the King Power Stadium at the end of May.

As his remarkable journey from non-league football to the pinnacle of the English game wraps up with Leicester, Vardy isn’t quite ready to hang up his boots. He still believes he’s got what it takes to compete in the Premier League and is eyeing a final hurrah in England’s top tier after dismissing the idea he will retire this summer.

Despite agreeing to a 12-month contract extension under Enzo Maresca last term, Vardy would now have to accept lower-tier terms to extend his stay with the relegated Foxes and has instead opted to move on.

Vardy is now pushing towards playing his 40th year and is eager to capitalise on what is left of his career. Though he has scored eight goals this term, his efforts couldn’t stave off Leicester’s relegation following a 1-0 loss to Liverpool.

Leicester and Vardy have both taken a heartfelt approach to mark his departure, with social media tributes and Vardy himself standing before the big board at the King Power Stadium declaring him the ‘GOAT’.

In a poignant parting message to Leicester supporters released on club channels, Vardy said: “To the fans of Leicester, gutted that this day is here, I knew it would (come) eventually. I’ve had 13 unbelievable years at this club with lots of success, some downs but the majority all highs.

“It’s finally time to call it a day, which I’m devastated about. But I think the timing is right. I just want to sincerely thank you for taking me in as one of your own.

“Leicester will always, always have a massive place in my heart. I will make sure I’ll be following for the years to come in what I hope will be even more success for the club.

“As for now, this is my goodbye, but you will see me again soon. I promise.”

Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy reacted: “I’ve had many conversations in and out of football – but the conversation I had with him was special. It was a great chat from person to person, from former striker to former striker and manager to player.

“It was impressive – like his career. His love for the club comes through in every word he says.

“What stands out is his loyalty to the club and taking responsibility for the club and doing everything possible to do the best he can be – and to perform. He was there through thick and thin.

“Always providing the typical Jamie Vardy way of playing – aggressive, quick, intuitive. A fans’ favourite. When you have someone who can play like that and score goals for you like that, that’s what he’s going to be.”
