England captain Harry Kane has delivered an emotinal message to his team-mates ahead of the Euro 2024 final against Spain.
Continually tormented by the heartbreaking loss to Italy in the Euros final in 2021, Kane has insisted that the England squad are ready to fulfill Gareth Southgate’s vision of instilling pride back into the national side.
Ahead of their showdown with Spain in the Olympiastadion, Kane declared: “Over the years we’ve done fantastically well in a lot of tournaments – but now it’s time to get over the line.
“A lot of us were heartbroken three years ago and it’s been a long journey back. Full credit to the boys for the resilience that they have shown – and we’re really desperate to now go one step further.
“It would mean everything. It would be the most incredible feeling a professional footballer could get – and to give the fans a moment in history and something to celebrate would be very special.”
Meanwhile, Southgate has revealed that his message to his players in his eight years as manager of England has remained largely the same – that dreams can come true.
“I’m not a believer in fairytales – but I am a believer in dreams. Fate, the run we’ve had, the late goals and penalties doesn’t equate to it being ‘our moment’. We have to now make it happen.
“We have to get this trophy to get the respect of the rest of the football world. I travelled to World Cups and European Championships watching as an observer and on the highlights on the big screens before games we weren’t in them. They only showed the finals and the big games.
“We always had high expectations but they didn’t match where we were performance-wise. We have now.
“Tomorrow, I don’t have any fear of what might happen because I’ve been through everything. I want my players to feel that fearlessness. If we’re not afraid to lose, it gives us a better chance of winning.”
