La Liga has joined the Premier League in having five spots in the UEFA Champions League 2025-26 season after coming second in UEFA’s league coefficient system.
Spain was guaranteed the extra spot after competitor Italy’s Lazio was knocked out of the UEFA Europa League 2024-25 quarterfinals by Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt, while La Liga’s Athletic club beat Rangers.

In La Liga, the top four teams – Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Athletic Club – are likely to secure the normal UCL spots while fifth-placed Villareal and sixth-placed Real Betis will battle for the extra place in Europe’s Premier competition.
What is the point allocation system and how is it decided?
UEFA calculates the coefficient of each association each season based on the clubs’ results in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League
- Teams earn two points for a win
- One for a draw
- The points obtained by each club are added up and then divided by the number of clubs from that league participating in Europe.
