Lamine Yamal ‘demands pay rise’ after Barcelona slap £1bn release clause on star

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal wants to become one of Barcelona’s highest earners after the club made a huge move towards securing his long-term his future. Yamal’s current deal with the Catalan giants expires in 2026, but negotiations over a new contract have begun after his stunning breakthough season.

The winger made 50 club appearances, scoring seven times, and then further enhanced his reputation with an impressive Euro 2024 campaign.

His semi-final strike against France provided one of the highlights of the tournament, and the youngster also started the final as Luis de la Fuente’s team beat England 2-1 to be crowned champions in Berlin.

And since the tournament in Germany, Yamal’s agent Jorge Mendes has been vocal in public about his client deserving an improved contract. He signed his first professional terms after turning 16, but in accordance with the regulations that only allow a three-year deal at that age.

However, according to Sport 45, the two parties also struck a private agreement over guarantees of a later deal that would run until 2030. Aware of his prestigious talent, the club also reportedly put a £1billion release clause in place to guard against him leaving.

However, Mendes and Lamal now seemingly want to bring forward a number of deadlines on order to adapt his income. The agent is said to have cited the wages commanded Lionel Messi before his exit to PSG, and wants assertions over a huge pay-rise when Lamal turns 18.

Previous reports in Spain have suggested Yamal currently earns aound £27,000-per-week. Frenkie de Jong is perceived to top the Barcelona list on around £600,000-per-week.

Given his potential to become an all-time great, it will come as little surprise to fans that Yamal harbours ambitions to be amongst the club’s best earners. Especially given that this week, he was named in the Euro 2024 team of the tournament by organisers.

Gary Lineker sarcastically said “he should be banned” given his maturity and form, and also left France player Adrien Rabiot red-faced. The Juventus midfielder had cast doubt on his ability to handle the spotlight ahead of the semi-final clash.

But after curling a long-range strike into the top corner, Yamal ran to a TV camera and yelled “Speak now! Speak now!” in comments that appeared to be in reference to Rabiot. And he was later asked about his actions.

“My celebration? It was for the person who knows it is for him,” he said. “In the end we should not give importance to any of that. I have helped to the team.”
